Wireshark — crashed during installation

In my previous post I wrote about my virtual internship experience with CyberSecurity@ANZ Virtual Program by ANZ on Forage. I have to download Wireshark for one of the task to analyze a Packet Capture file. I encountered some issues while installing it on my PC, it kept crashing near to the end of the installation process. Turns out it was the Npcap installation that was making it crash.

Problem

PC crashed while installing Wireshark.

PC System

I am running on i5–10 Processor, 1.6 CPU, 8GB Ram.

Troubleshoot

After it crashed a few times on my PC, I tried installing it on my hypervisor (VMware) just to see if it would work and again I ran into the same issue.

I tried to google for an answer hoping someone has encounter the same issue but found nothing.

But on observation the system crashed on PC and within the hypervisor when it gets to “NMAP Installation Options”

System crash at this step, after selecting “Install” button.

Untick the “Install Npcap 1.00” option

Solution

Install Wireshark without the Npcap.

Install the Npcap separately from the website https://nmap.org/npcap/

And problem solved.

Hope this is helpful for anyone running into the same issue.
